Compostable cups and plates

Hi,
Can you tell us where to find the compostable plastic cups and plates that were used at the auction this year?
Also, Menlo Park does not have a composting service, like some cities. Backyard composting is not a "sustainable" activity for me, so I'm wondering if there is a way to deliver materials for composting somewhere.

It's great that three local PTAs will start using compostable products for their events now, thanks for passing the info along! And kudos to you for following up with the MP City Council as well. Too bad there's nothing in the pipeline that will work for people sooner than 2011. If individual homeowners aren't able to build their own compost pile, how about a neighborhood pile? Clearly this type of solution works only if there's mutual property that everyone can agree to use for this purpose and to share the work of maintaining the pile. Of course the whole community would then derive the benefits of all the great soil to use in their gardens too. But such an effort clearly takes a few committed individuals to get off the ground. :-)
Since I arranged for Allied Waste to pick up the school's compost materials only--and don't live in the MP area myself--I did not explore whether a person could drop off compost to their facility, but that might be worth exploring as well.

The only way I really know of is to borrow one of our digital thermometers from the Peninsula Cool Lending Library (located in Marion's classroom, by the window just inside the door), place a room temperature cup of water in the fridge and immerse the digital thermometer probe in the water and leave it for a few hours. You can do this for your freezer too. And you can check out items from the library for one week, no charge! :-) Good luck! Keep us posted about how this works for you.

I hope this is a good venue to discuss barriers and roadblocks to implementing the challenges. How are others doing with the shorter shower thing? Changing my very ingrained personal hygiene habits is proving more difficult than changing lightbulbs... any tips?

Does anyone know a good landscaper who is "green"? I am thinking of getting rid of that patch of lawn in front of my home and instead planting some native plants that require no watering. Any contacts or ideas? Thanks. Caroline

Calif. Native Plant Society has a Gardening With Natives interest group and an inspirational annual (free) tour of native plant gardeners. Check the web site for the Santa Clara chapter. These are wonderful people and delighted to help. Also plan to attend our annual wildflower show (also free) at Mission College in Santa Clara where you can get free matrials and advice, see a breathtaking spectrum of native plants in bloom, but seeds, etc. Truly a feast for all the senses. Free parking, signs to follow to lead you there. Hours 10-4 both Sat. & Sun.

RE: Gray water

I know little about this topic personally, but found the following post (edited):
Setting a precedent in water conservation and keeping water local, California's first permitted residential graywater system with a constructed wetland passed inspection on January 24. The residents of the EcoHouse in Berkeley will save between 18,000 to 27,000 gallons of water each year by using wastewater instead of city-supplied drinking water to irrigate their garden.
Home graywater systems and municipal treatment wetlands already exist in California, but this design combines both systems in a dense residential area.
Of all the water on Earth only 0.007% is readily accessible for direct human use. Fresh water is only becoming more precious due to over-extraction, climate change, and pollution. "Graywater" refers to water drained from sinks, showers, tubs and washing machines. The EcoHouse design features an EPA approved constructed wetland that uses gravel and wetland plants with deep root systems to treat the graywater before it irrigates the garden. The system does not invite mosquitoes because water always remains below the surface. During the rainy months a flip of a switch directs graywater back to the city sewer.
"Meeting state and city codes can make it intimidating for the average homeowner to use graywater safely," says EcoHouse co-founder Babak Jacinto Tondre. "We have created a template that can save a lot of money and consulting time," he says.
The EcoHouse plans to help guide the public through the permit process through presentations and tours of the system. It's part of the project's mission of "making ecological ways of living accessible and affordable to people of all ages, ethnicities, and income levels." Graywater systems can be low cost, save money and turn otherwise wasted water into a beautiful garden. To learn more about the EcoHouse graywater system or to schedule an EcoHouse tour, contact ecohouse@ecologycenter or call 510-548-2220 ext. 224

I just put this in myreply to ponteri10 about bags. I have successfully started bio-bags recently. They are good trash bags and compost bags, and are 100% compostable and biodegradable. http://www.biobagusa.com/
I bought them at Whole Foods but find them very expensive there (like everything else at WF!!). I found out you can buy them by the case online directly, which I will try. If anyone wants me to order some for them let me know. Caroline

One thing that can help is to us reusable bags when you shop for groceries. Buy one bag each time you shop until you have enough. Then keep them in your car so that you have them when you need them. Also, when shopping at other retailers decline a bag for small items. Many retailers use too many bags because they seem to think consumers like it that way.

Great point -- I always forget them unless they are already in my car!!
Speaking of bags, I have been trying with good success the bio-degradable plastic bags (made with corn). You can use them for trash or they are great for collecting compost. Here is the information on bio-bags: http://www.biobagusa.com/
I have been buying them at Whole Foods but it gets pricey, so I will be ordering them by the case directly online (if anyone is interested in trying them let me know).

Wow.
As a result of our cool campaign pledge, we had our furnace inspected today and found out that our furnace is very close to cracking and leaking CO into our home. We are replacing it tomorrow!
Maybe we would have discovered this without the Cool Campaign, but I’m giving it all the credit anyway.
-Karen Grove
P.S. In addition to saving us from poisonous gases, the new furnace is expected to save ~45% on our heating bill…which must mean that we are reducing our heating-related CO2 emissions by about the same amount. I did not expect to find such big gains to be had in our relatively new house (the furnace is from 1982).
