anybody else finds the shower challenge tough?
Feb 14 2007, 1:20 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 14 2007, 1:20 PM EST
I hope this is a good venue to discuss barriers and roadblocks to implementing the challenges. How are others doing with the shorter shower thing? Changing my very ingrained personal hygiene habits is proving more difficult than changing lightbulbs... any tips? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

This is a tough one for everyone, I think. We've used a timer set at 3 minutes a few times, and it really seemed to wake us all up to how looooong we were really taking in the shower--we all thought we were pretty speedy before that. Definitely its a accomplishment worth acknowledging when one of us keeps our shower under three minutes. But we're definitely a work in progress! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

3 minutes? Wow. I am so far away from that. Have I mentioned my thick hair, and all my other excuses for staying under there at least 10 minutes? This will definitely be a challenge worth working toward for me. I'll bring a timer in the bathroom and work my way down 1mn at a time... C. Do you find this valuable?

Another way of tackling this might be to take fewer showers per week. We Americans tend to think that bathing daily (or even twice daily) is normal and sanitary, when Europeans, for example, bathe much less than that. We don't have to turn into Pepe Le Pew, but we could cut down on the frequency. Also, this way, we might be able to justify spending more than 3 minutes in the shower.

Good point, my mom is French and definitely does not shower every day. But I got North-Americanized on this early on. My daughter hates to take a bath and is following her French heritage of "twice a week" :-) Do you find this valuable?

I find it easier and more meaningful to close up the drain and measure the height of the water when I'm done. I also find it more pleasant to reduce the flow rate than the time I'm in the shower. Sometimes I do this with the main valves, but sometimes I do it with the shutoff that is part of my shower head. I started with 7 inches and now I'm down to 4 inches. I am really really looking forward to the summer when my new solar thermal system will make me all the hot water I want. I use the tub grey water for gardening, so my guilt factor has the possibility of going to zero. Do you find this valuable?

Can you explain how you manage to get the tub water out of the tub? That's a great idea. Is the soap ok for the plants? Do you find this valuable?

No problem at all with this one, as I have been taking "Navy showers" (turn stopcock on shower head on only long enough to wet head or body to lather up, and then again to rinse off shampoo or soap) since the drought of 1974, knowing that Calif. is a desert and water a precious resource. The only hard part was giving up the occasional bubble bath. Do you find this valuable?

I modified the house pluming so that the tub drain connects to a 3/4 inch PVC pipe that goes through a vent in the crawlspace. Soap is fine but not chlorine bleach. It has been that way for about 15 years with no problem other than one time when too much chlorine bleach killed a nectarine tree. This year I plan to attach a hose to the PVC pipe and move the hose to a different fruit tree about every week. Do you find this valuable?

You guys are really inspiring. Thanks! I can't say I am down to the Navy shower yet but I'm making progress, I've skipped one or two shower days, and I've taken a page out of John's book and saved up some of the water for the plants. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm not yet ready for the Navy shower either but I find it OK to reduce the flow rate during parts of my shower as long as I can turn it back up for other parts. Do you find this valuable?
